Revenue Manager, he holds a key decision-making position in a hotel

It is THE hotel business of the moment. All hotel chains and large establishments have their yield managers, more commonly known as revenue managers. In real pro of the figure you juggle with the reservations and room prices to improve the profitability of the hotel.

You may prefer to rent five rooms at full rate rather than ten at reduced rate. To guide you, you take a close look at the competition and follow the reservation tables on a daily basis.

Good communicator, you know how to listen to the needs of tour operators and travel agencies who may “buy” a lot of rooms from you at the last minute.

In a group or hotel establishment, your mission as revenue manager essentially consists in optimizing the income per available room, called REVPAR, and per guest, as well as the average price per room, in the establishment or establishments for which you are responsible. In this perspective, your role is to adapt room rates according to demand, in order to optimize the performance of your hotel.

You are required to develop a commercial strategy adapted to the establishment. Thus, you must find the right balance between bookings made through external channels (booking sites, travel agencies), requiring a commission, and those made directly to the hotel or via the hotel’s website.

The different missions of a Revenue Manager 

  • You optimize the hotel’s revenues, i.e., sell the hotel’s services (rooms, conference rooms, spa, etc.) at the best price to achieve maximum profitability.
  • You analyze the occupancy rate, average price and income per room.
  • You establish a clear and organised pricing and sales strategy with reservation agents, sales representatives and receptionists,
  • You organize a competitive intelligence unit to determine the pricing policy of the main competitors.
  • You draw up provisional budgets for commercial actions.
  • You make rigorous forecasts for the coming months.

You work in direct contact with the Hotel Manager, the Room Division Manager, the Front Office Manager or the Sales and Marketing Manager.

The qualities of a Revenue Manager 

In addition to being versatile, you must have certain assets to carry out all your missions:

  • You have a spirit of synthesis and analysis.
  • You have a good sense of business and excellent negotiation skills.
  • You are comfortable with the figures, you know how to analyse them in order to make forecasts and implement an appropriate pricing and sales strategy.
  • You are a good communicator and federator to make your pricing policy understood and applied to the hotel’s various services (reception, sales, and management…)
  • You know how to take measured risks.
